Australian Association for Byzantine Studies XVIIITH Biennial Conference
Apologies for cross posting.Byzantine Culture in TranslationAustralian Association for Byzantine Studies XVIIITH BiennialConference,28-30 November 2014, University of QueenslandByzantine culture emanated from Constantinople throughout the MiddleAges, eastwards into Muslim lands and central Asia, north into Russian,Germanicand Scandinavian territories, south across the Mediterranean into EgyptandNorth Africa and westwards to Italy, Sicily and the other remnants ofthewestern Roman Empire. Byzantine culture was translated, transported andtransmitted into all these areas through slow or sudden processes ofpermeation, osmosis and interaction throughout the life of the Empire, fromthe fourth century to the fifteenth and far beyond. Various literaryaspectsof Byzantine culture that were literally translated from Greek into thelocal and scholarly languages of the Medieval West and Muslim MiddleEastinclude dreambooks, novels, medical and scientifica texts and works ofAncient Greek literature. Yet translation was a phenomenon thatstretchedfar beyond texts, into the areas of clothing and fashion, the visualarts(especially icons) and architecture, military organisations, imperialcourtceremonial, liturgical music and mechanical devices. This conferencecelebrates all aspects of literary, spiritual or material culture thatweretransported across the breadth of the Empire and exported from it.Papersare welcome on all aspects of Byzantine culture that exerted someinfluence- whether lasting or fleeting - and were translated intonon-Greek-speakinglands, from the early Byzantine period to the present day.Confirmed speaker: Maria Mavroudi, University of California - BerkeleyConvenor: Dr Amelia Brown, The School of History, Philosophy, ReligionandClassics, University of QueenslandPapers of 20 minutes are now sought on any of the topics mentionedabove. Please send a title and abstract of 200 words along with your own emailaddress, affiliation and title to the convenor at[email protected].Closing date for submissions: 31 August.Bursaries:Two bursaries of $500 each will be offered to postgraduate students orpostdoctoral fellows who present papers and are not residents ofQueensland.Applications may be sent with abstract and CV to Bronwen Neil, PresidentofAABS, at [email protected].
