3 Brooches

Strickland Brooch, 830-860. Anglo-Saxon, silver and gold. Now at the British Museum. The rich look of the brooch is enhanced by a number of decorative techniques which clearly show the Anglo-Saxon love of color and light. Animal motifs are featured throughout. The fine craftsmanship and wrought gold make this a precious find.
Brooch in the Form of a Bird of Prey, found Vendel Sweden. 500-600. This crouching bird of prey, usually identified as an eagle, is thought to represent Odin, the supreme god of war and battle in Nordic mythology. The design is an early example of the sort of animal motifs that become so important in Viking art

Box-Shaped Brooch, Viking. 9th-mid 11th century, Böda, Sweden. Bronze. Box-shaped brooches such as this one were worn by the Viking women of Gotland (the islands in the Baltic Sea south of Sweden) to fasten a shawl or cloak about the shoulders. They also doubled as containers to hold small objects. A cast open latticework design fills the banded sides of the box and the circular front closure; the front of the brooch is further ornamented at the center with a series of raised cast squares and a highly polished circle. Now at the Walter's Art Museum. I want to know how the bottom half became so much more worn than the upper.
