anglo saxon great hall uncovered
What a momentous find! Archeologists with the University of Reading have uncovered the site of an Anglo Saxon hall, the first of its kind to be found in 30 years!
"This is a key piece of evidence that helped the team age the feasting hall to the late 6th/early 7th century. It is a section of a decorative horse harness made of gilt copper-alloy, that would probably have been attached to a bridle or harness for a horse, dating it to c.525-575 AD. This supports the view of pre-Christian culture in this period being based on a warrior society, with horses at forefront of this ideal."Favorite line from an archeologist: Gabor Thomas, said: "This would undoubtedly have been the scene of many Beowulfy type activities, great assemblies for feasts that lasted for days, much drinking and story-telling, rich gifts like arm rings being presented, all of that. There could have been no more visible sign of wealth and status than raising a hall like this." I guess if you're an archeologist of Anglo Saxon sites, you're entitled to say 'Beowulfy' :)
