Musical minstrels, candlelit tours, traditional festive décor and a glass of mulled wine ? York?s Barley Hall has it all this Christmas.
York?s restored Barley Hall town house ? parts of which date back to 1360 - is inviting visitors to experience a unique, authentic medieval Christmas at its ?Barley Hall by Candlelight? evenings taking place on 3rd, 10th and 17th December.
The events centre around talented medieval musicians, Bedale-based Trouvere. Trouvere?s performances feature a traditional costumed band of minstrels presenting songs, music story telling and dance to bring the spirit of medieval Christmas to life.
The events also give visitors the opportunity to step back in time to experience typical Tudor festive trimmings. Visitors can see the decorations as would have be-decked the home of Lord and Lady Snawsell and hear tales of Christmas traditions of the time.
Organisers, York Archaeological Trust, say it?s a great opportunity for visitors to see the hall in full festive fettle ? as it would have been all those years ago. Says Jane Stockdale, events and exhibitions manger at York Archaeological Trust, ?Barley Hall is an enchanting setting for Christmas celebrations. Visitors can enjoy the festive atmosphere with Lord and Lady Snawsell, with stories and music to provide entertainment throughout the night.?
