Contemporary Perceptions of Byzantium - conference in Istanbul
Exploring how Byzantium is represented, revised and resisted in Istanbul?s past, present, and future is the maiden mission for the recently established Istanbul Studies Center.
The center is set to host an international symposium that will bring together Byzantinists, scholars and public figures to discuss the influence of Byzantium on today?s Istanbul.
The symposium titled ?Contemporary Perceptions of Byzantium? is scheduled for Thursday to Saturday and will enable attendees to reflect on the persistence of Byzantium in contemporary Istanbul and on its relationship to the past.
The symposium, co-sponsored by the Kadir Has and Koç universities in Istanbul and supported by the Rezan Has Museum, is set to host a long list of academics and speakers including Sava? Arslan, Fener Patriarch Bartholomeos I and Buket Kitapç? Bayr?.
Presentations will be in English and the symposium is open to the public. It will be held at two venues: Kadir Has University?s Big Hall on the Cibali Campus and Koç University?s Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations in Beyo?lu.
The symposium will also offer screenings of Turkish films with Byzantine themes and a performance of Byzantine music, past and present.
