Norske Stavkirker, the interiors
Norway's stave churches are endlessly fascinating to me. My most recent inquest has been the interior decoration. What kind of art was displayed inside - and how did it relate to the viewer? I picked up some gems from two books:
Norske Stavkirker, Roar Hauglid, Utgitt av Riksantikvaren, Dreyers Forlag.
Stave Churches in Norway, Dan Lindholm, photos by Walter Roggenkamp, Rudolf Street Press, London, 1968.
What a spectacular Madonna. She feels so Scandinavian to me; the medium of wood carving, and her long blonde braids.
I appreciate atmospheric photos like this of architecture. They capture the feeling of being in the building. Especially for people like me, who may never get the chance to venture to the fjords and churches of Norway...
I love highly decorated seats, thrones, chairs. I've studied Welsh eisteddfod chairs and Egyptian thrones, but I have got to say this one has to be in my top 5.
